Art: Moon Goddess

I decided it was again time to draw something of value, so because I love my fantasy art I drew a moon goddess.  I think this method of shading is really what I prefer and I think I'm going to stick to it and try to improve in that style. The flowy energy power stuff came out much better than I thought it would, as did the moon! I've really been pushing myself to do backgrounds lately instead of just drawing characters on a blank screen.

The metal cuff on her leg is modeled after my ear cuff.  I thought she needed something extra so I experimented with making a metallic piece of jewelry. I also made sure to draw at least one hand, as I usually prefer to hide them or draw them in really boring easy to draw positions.
Overall I think I learned a lot from this picture. Two things I need to improve on next time include adding more wrinkle detail to the clothes and improving my foot drawing skills.

Art: Forest Pixie

Wow.  It has literally been months since I've picked up my Wacom tablet and finished a picture digitally.  The last few weeks I have been craving to do some digital work but my busy schedule made sure that didn't happen.  Finally now that the semester is over I was able to plug my tablet in, download the new driver, and get to drawing.  I decided to color a fairy that I had sketched about a week ago.

Here is the original sketch after being scanned into my computer.  I drew the upper body in like 10 minutes and then spent about 40 minutes on the legs.  I just suck so much at the lower half of bodies.  Ugh.  I also never add backgrounds to my pictures so this time I was determined to try something.  I really need to practice both legs and backgrounds more if I ever want to get any better.

And here is the finished picture, done on Photoshop 7.  I tried a different form of coloring this time.  I lined very thinly with black and then colored in the base colors.  From there I took a wet watercolor brush and did all the shading with that at varying opacities and sizes.  Overall I really like how it came out, especially considering I haven't touched my tablet in quite some time. I'm especially proud of that tree.  I literally never ever do backgrounds so I'm just really loving everything about this.  Hopefully this summer I can draw a lot more and keep improving.

And here is the side by side sketch vs finished product comparison.  I love going back and looking at this to see just how much work I put into the picture.

This was actually supposed to be a witch flying on a broomstick but as I started drawing the upper body I was getting more of a pixie vibe so I decided to completely scratch my initial idea and go with this.  That seems to always be how my pictures end up....completely different than what I had originally planned.
Haha oh well!

I hope you liked my first art post in a while.  I am definitely open to constructive criticism!

A Break From Makeup: I'm Loving This New Wine and Paint Party Trend!

Lately I have been seeing on Facebook that so many people are attending these classes where you basically drink wine while being taught step by step how to paint a picture.  Right from the start I was enamored by this concept as wine and paint are two things I love! Therefore when my mom asked me to go with her to a fundraiser wine and paint event I jumped at the opportunity!  I live in a very small town and the fire hall that hosted this part was PACKED.  They had to book a second class after the initial, because it filled up so fast.  Because I had such a great time I thought I'd share with you all my experience.

So here is the original image that the lesson was based on.  I think my experience was a little different than the classes at the studio because it was a fundraiser.  Usually wine is BYOB but for this event it was supplied by the hosts I'm assuming.  We bought our tickets early so we got a 2 hour paint lesson, a decorated wine glass, and two glasses of wine for $40.  Lessons at the studio are $40 and BYOB, and I'm not sure on the wine glass situation.  Anyway we all sat down at an canvas that had 3 paint brushes, an apron, a paper towel, and a cup of water.

This is a step by step progression compilation of our paintings.  The instructor stood at the front and walked us through each step. Another employee was going around the room providing extra paint to anyone who needed it.  We all got a squirt of red, blue, yellow, brown, black, and white on a paper plate.  This meant we had to mix all colors on our own.  As you can see my mom and I deviated from the original color scheme, as did a lot of other people.  The instructor said this was fairly unusual and was pretty excited that we were all being so unique.  The instructor herself was very patient and clear in her instructions.  I didn't think her picture was that great but it is very possible that she did not do her best as to prevent making the participants feel bad about their work.

Here is a close up of my finished image.  I chose to make the vases resemble Erlenmeyer flasks because I'm nerdy and ridiculous.  I opted to not write the words as my handwriting is horrendous.  I want to go in with a sharpie and add measure lines to the vases to really drive home that science theme. Some of the details I added on my own based on the original.  For example the instructor did not explain how to do colored shading.  Instead she just had the class ad the black line down the middle of each petal and a white highlight.  She also did not have us do the black and white details on the brown background. Additionally she did not say to slant the middle of the outside flowers to create a perspective of them facing another direction.

And here is a picture of my mom and I with our paintings!  To put this in perspective, I paint from time to time but I only do portraits, this was my first time every painting a flower.  My mom has never picked up a paintbrush IN HER LIFE.  She has zero artistic ability or experience and she was still able to keep up and produce a nice painting.  Therefore do not let your lack of artistic ability deter you from giving this a try.  You might be surprised with what you create!

I hope you enjoyed my wine and paint experience.  The specific studio that taught this class was aMuse Uncorked.  I live in a pretty small town but there are at least three of these studios within a 45 minute drive of my house, therefore you should hopefully not have a problem finding one near you!

Have fun, drink wine, and get painting!

Portrait Practice!

Recently I've found myself with a tad bit of time as the semester is winding down so I drew some portraits for a few of my friends.  I have become a little rusty as I havn't been practicing lately but overall I'm pleased with how these came out. I wish they looked as good scanned as they do in real life. I drew all three of these using only a mechanical pencil, an eraser, a paper towel, and a q-tip.

This is Aaron. I met him very recently and we hit it off marvelously.  We both have a similar taste in music and he has also been giving me ballroom dancing lessons, which is awesome!

This is Erica.  It was her birthday the day I drew this and she was very excited to receive it as a gift.  She has been a great friend for the past year and I'm going to miss her a lot when we graduate.

This is Sam.  She is my best friend in the whole entire world.  We met orientation freshman year and have been inseparable every since.  I hope we never stop being there for each other <3
Sam was rocking some sweet winged liner in the reference picture so I suppose this post is somewhat related to makeup! Haha.

Shiro Haul: Mother of Dragons and Not Very Effective

My sample size of Not Very Effective getting dangerously low prompted me to buy my very first full sized eye shadow from Shiro Cosmetics.  I also picked up Mother of Dragons because I love Daenerys and Game of Thrones.

I also made sure to mention that I love pink and purple eye shadow and of course Shiro came through by giving me the perfect samples :)

Shiro Cosmetics Mother of Dragons Swatch

So here is Mother of Dragons.  First off I love the art, not going to lie it was 70% of the reason I got the full size instead of the smaller size. The color is nice too.  When swatched it looks to be a pretty even mix of red, purple, and silver.  However when on, at least on my skin, the red is what shows up the most.  Overall I have no regrets! <3

Shiro Cosmetics Not Very Effective Swatch

Not Very Effective is my favorite purple crease color.  I wore the sample a lot and I'm glad to finally have the full size. I know I've swatched this before but oh well you can look at its prettiness again!

And here is a quick look I did using Mother of Dragons on my lid and Not Very Effective in my crease.

And here are swatches of the two samples I got.  Ever in Your Favor is from the Hunger Games collection and based off of the extravagant Effie Trinket.  Also it is the most beautiful pink ever.  I am seriously going to be sad when this is gone.  From what I could find I'll Move That For You is MineCraft themed, I've never played it so I don't quite understand the reference but its still pretty so I'm happy.

Here is a look I did using Ever in Your Favor on my lid, Mother of dragons in my crease, and I'll Move that For You in the outer corner.

Where to buy: Shiro Cosmetics
Price: $6 for full 2 gram jars

Oh also just because its related here is a picture I started a while ago of The Mother of Dragons that I never found time to finish. Maybe one day.

Lipstick Concept Art

So my dream hobby right now is to learn to make lipsticks and then create some really fun and unique Pokemon themed colors!  Honestly I'm not even sure if the concepts I have below are possible, but I had a heck of a lot of fun designing them.
Balloon
Based on Jigglypuff
Soft pink with a light blue sheen

Fox
Based on Vulpix

LIght brown with an orange sheen

Moonlight
Based on Umbreon

Black with a gold sheen

New Species
Based on Mew

Matte soft pink

Sun
Based on Espeon

Light lavender with a red sheen

Hope you enjoyed my crazy lipstick concepts!

Jigglypuff, Vulpix, Mew, Umbreon, and Espeon are property of Pokemon and Nintendo.  I'm just a silly fan that uses these adorable creatures as inspiration.

Cute Pokemon Doodles

Here are some pokemon doodles, the Eevee and Pikachu are pretty old but the Raichu I did fairly recently.

You should recognize this one from the bottom of this blog, the prize at the end of Celadon Alley :P

Pikaball!

I was displeased by the lack of art combining my two favorite things: Pokemon and makeup, so I created some.

The Tidecaller

I was bored and wanted to practice a different shading technique so I drew Nami from League of Legends.  She is one of my favorite supports :)

Magic the Gathering Cupcakes

For my boyfriend's birthday I made him these super cute Magic the Gathering cupcakes. I don't really play but he is super into it and he loooooved these cupcakes.  The look on his face was so worth the time it took to draw those tiny little chocolate symbols.

I made these using a boxed cake mix and a premade whipped icing. I know I'm lazy but I had enough to do with the icing and chocolate bits. Anyway I made around 24 cupcakes...so much trial and error on the icing oh my god.  It was either too light, too dark, or too weird.  Let me tell you making black icing was a pain in the butt! I used cocoa powder plus a mixture of all of my food colorings to get it dark enough.  The blue, red, and green also contain a little bit of cocoa powder because the base food coloring shade was just too light.

To do the chocolate pieces I printed out the symbols, put some wax paper over it, melted some chocolate, made a makeshift icing dispenser out of wax paper, a hair tie, and tape, and then drew these. It was a huge struggle.  Towards the end the chocolate was starting to solidify, I made a huge mess.

But it was worth it because he was soooooo happy when he saw them. :)
He'd kill me if he knew I posted this :3

League of Legends Comic

I made this comic back when my boyfriend and I first started dating.  He played Draven a lot and I enjoyed playing Ahri.  This comic ensued.

Rat Attempt

I love rats so much and I want pet rats so bad.  In the meantime I'm trying to get better at drawing them.  Here is my first attempt at a rat.

Yuno Gasai

I recently finished watching Future Diary (Mirai Nikki) and I absolutely loved it!  If you like dark, twisted, intense, emotional, heart wrenching, violent, and exciting anime then I highly recommend it.  Because I'm on spring break and kind of bored I drew one of the main characters today, Yuno Gasai.
